Raiders reaching out to world
For the third straight year, The Oakland Raiders training camp will have an international flavor as the Silver and Black have invited three international coaches to join Raiders Head Coach Art Shell's staff during summer workouts at the team's Napa Valley, Calif. training complex.
Patrick Esume of Germany, Radames Carrillo of Mexico and Tang Hai-yan of China will attend Raider practices and team meetings while also interacting with Raider coaches and players.
Esume, 32, has spent the past two seasons on the NFL Europe's Hamburg Sea Devils coaching staff as special teams coordinator. In addition, he tutored running backs and tight ends. Prior to joining the Sea Devils, Esume spent three years as national coach with the Frankfurt Galaxy, which won the World Bowl title in 2003.
Esume coached the Hamburg Wild Huskies, of the German Football League (GFL), where he served as defensive backs coach in 1999, rising to the position of defensive coordinator in 2001. Esume began his football career at the second division club Hamburg Silver Eagles as a wide receiver and then switched to defensive back. In 1995, he played cornerback for the Hamburg Blue Devils in the GFL and won the Euro Bowl three consecutive times (1996-98) and one German Bowl (1996).
Carrillo played offensive guard and tight end in all youth divisions with Club Jaguares. In high school and college he played with Laguna, winning the National Conference Championship in 1993. He was named offensive captain in 1990 and 1992. His father, Don Salvador Carrillo, was a renowned cycling promoter in Mexico.
As a coach, Carrillo has been in charge of all the divisions of Club Jaguares since 1991. In 2002, he became the coach of Vikingos San Isidro, only to return to Jaguares as head coach in 2004, a position he currently holds.
Tang Hai-yan, one of the first flag football coaches in China, has led Beijing Shoushi Middle School of China to the Beijing City Championship three years in a row, and to a National Flag Football title. The Heilongjiang, China native is a graduate of Beijing Sport University and serves as a physical education teacher at Beijing Shoushi Middle School.
The Raiders have long been recognized as a global organization and have increased the popularity of NFL football worldwide by playing in American Bowls in London, Barcelona, Tokyo and Mexico City.
The Raiders reach an international audience through the team's official websites in English, Spanish, Chinese and German. For the past several years, the Raiders have had a business presence in Germany during the World Bowl, NFL Europe's Championship game. Last year, Raiders representatives attended the NFL Flag Football World Championship in Beijing, China.
