Dave Dalby He was nominated to the NFL Hall of Fame in 2001, but wasn't elected. Dalby was a fourth-round draft pick of the Raiders out of UCLA, where he was the Bruins' Most Valuable Player in 1971. An Interview With Dave Dalby Q: Who were your head coaches? Dave Dalby: Well, let’s see. We went through John Madden and Tom Flores Q: What was your favorite game that you played while you were with the Raiders? Dave Dalby: I played in all three of the Super Bowls, and they are all right up there. Q: What were some of your most memorable times during the Super Bowls that you remember? Dave Dalby: Well, winning them actually. We were in the age when you spent a week back there. I mean, we had a week off and then get on the airplane to get there - the camaraderie and just the feeling of playing well and winning. Q: Who were some of your favorite teammates? Dave Dalby: All of them. I couldn’t make a list that is long enough. I played for fourteen years and there were so many; the Hall of Famers and of course the Hall of Shamers like Steve Sylvester and Bob Nelson. It was just a great group all around, and winning helps. Q: Do you still keep in touch with your teammates? Dave Dalby: Oh yeah, definitely. We went on a fishing trip: Jim Otto, Raymond Chester and Errol Mann and myself. We play in tournaments just to see all the guys. It’s a pretty close group, especially from the mid-70’s to the mid-80’s. Q: What team did you like to play the most? Dave Dalby: I liked to play all of them. The thing with The Oakland Raiders is that there are so many rivalries. First it was with Pittsburgh, then there was San Diego and then there was Denver and they are all good teams. Those are the ones that were challenging and the ones that we got up for - the play-off games and the Championship games. With the Oakland Raiders we worked hard and when we played we made rivalry out of it. Q: You had a very long career, how were you able to achieve that? Dave Dalby: I worked out a lot. I was fortunate and lucky. I had 16 operations but I was able to come back from them. I had a great work ethic. Q: What have you been doing since retiring? Dave Dalby: I’ve done quite a few things. I have my own business and I work for my brother. I live in Dana Point, CA. I have a son 18, and a daughter 17. |
