Sean Jones
 Sean Jones

Position: DB
Height: 6-1
Weight: 212
Born: 03/02/1982
College: Georgia
NFL Experience: 3

Former Raiders defensive lineman Sean Jones played for the Silver and Black from 1984 through the 1987 season. Chosen in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft, he came to embody the toughness of the Raiders with his punishing hits and attitude. After his playing days, Jones owned and operated a few businesses, worked as an agent for a while, and worked in broadcasting.

Interview With Sean Jones

Q: When did you start playing football?

Sean Jones: I was in the 6th grade, 11 years old I think. I played in a recreation league in New Jersey.

Q: How did you become a Raider?

Sean Jones: I was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1984 draft out of Northeastern University.

Q: What did it mean for you to wear the Silver and Black?

Sean Jones: You have to wear it to understand it. It’s a fraternity. To pick up the tradition that Jim Otto and Jim Plunkett and others left behind and carry it forward is awesome. It’s a belief system. Something similar could be said of the New York Yankees. I’ve never played for them but I would imagine their tradition and dedication to
winning would inspire a similar feeling.

Q: What is your greatest memory from playing with the Raiders?

Sean Jones: Bo Jackson against Seattle. I still remember him trucking Brian Bosworth into the end zone. It’s a shame that his career ended so shortly because he had a chance to be great. He was an awesome athlete.

Q: Is there any one moment or play that stands out from your career?

Sean Jones: There was a game in ’86 against the Chiefs, in Kansas City, where we got into a huge fight with them. I can remember all the camaraderie I felt off the field being shown on the field. Our toughness as a team or organization, the camaraderie with my teammates, will always be with me.

Q: Do you keep in contact with any of your former teammates?

Sean Jones: I think of Sam Seale (’84 – ’87) and Linden King (’86 – ’89) as good friends. It’s hard not to keep in touch with your teammates. Like I said, it’s a fraternity, a bond that you share. Even if you haven’t seen someone in a while, once you do, you don’t miss a beat. You’re able to relive those moments like they happened yesterday.

Former Raiders defensive lineman Sean Jones (99) takes down former Broncos QB John Elway (7).

Q: Which team did you enjoy playing against the most?

Sean Jones: Division games were always my favorite. They were always such big games. I do remember one game against the Bears. We were both defensive teams. Both defenses were tough and by the end of the half we had each lost three quarterbacks. Our punter, Ray Guy, was getting ready to step in and play QB. Luckily, our 3rd QB came back to play. We knocked (Bears QB) Jim McMahon out for a few games.

Q: What are you doing now?

Sean Jones: I work in the Personnel department of the Raiders.
Given my financial background, my experience as an agent, and having been in the broadcast booth, I bring a unique perspective to the team. I assess players to determine their weaknesses and also look at how they might be able to help us in the future.

Q: Do you still attend any Raider games?

Sean Jones: Yes, I do. I sit in the Press Box. This gives me the best perspective to see if my thoughts about specific players and their weaknesses are correct. It’s also a great place to analyze players during the games. My job is a 24-hour thing, I’m always working. Even on game day.

Q: Are there any messages you would like to pass along to the Raider fans?

Sean Jones: Get loud! Make it impossible for the other team to play here. Be our 12th man. We want our fans to have a total, interactive experience. You are truly part of the game. I don’t want to hear that K.C. fans, or anyone else’s fans, are great. We’ve got great fans. Show the other team how much you love the Raiders.
